Mentions that options are Uribe, Millar, Hinske and Aurilia.

If Cedeno is going to be gone, we're going to need another guy who can play SS and 2nd in a pinch.

I would actually like to get Uribe, but I think he's a type B free agent for some god forsaken reason.

...and after some research, he is in fact a type B, but the Sox didn't offer him arbitration. He's a very good glove and can hit in streaks. Sign me up.

I think keeping Cedeno is the best option, as long as he's not needed in a Peavy trade (should that happen).

From that article....

QUOTE According to Bruce Levine, Paul Bako will cost the Cubs more than what Henry Blanco signed for with the Padres (Blanco signed a one-year, $750,000 contract earlier in the week). Levine said Bako will not cost the Cubs $500,000 as rumored, but between $700,000 - $800,000.

The Cubs apparently were not thrilled with Blanco's play last year and with the fact Bako is a left-handed hitter would give them more flexibility. Levine added Henry Blanco is a good addition to the Padres and he will be a Major League manager one day.

I'm not sure how much more they could have asked of Blanco last season. I don't get that at all.

Defensively, he's seems to be sliding quite a bit IMO.

I like Hinske the best, because he would provide some insurance in right. I like Cedeno much more than Uribe. Aurilia probably makes the most sense because he could play up the middle in an emergency.

I agree with you on Cedeno, even though he's an empty vessel most of the time. I hope we don't waste too much cash on the 25th man. I assumed that would be Gathright anyway, not another IF.

A few years ago, Uribe was a lights-out GG-calibre middle-infielder. He looks older than his stated age, and he may have faded quite a bit defensively. Does anyone have any info on his glove these days?

His bat has always sucked. But so has Ronny's, except in AAA.

Uribe has no range and a shotty glove, he still has a rocket arm though.

If we're looking for a DeRosa-like guy, we could do a lot worse than Ty Wigginton. I'm curious as to why he remains unsigned. Like DeRo, he handles the corner infield and OF spots with aplomb, but can also play 2B (he played quite a bit of 2B in Tampa Bay in '06 and '07).

Last year his OPS+ was 128. (for context, Aramis had a 128 OPS+ last year. DeRo's was 118).
It just seems that with Aramis often missing 20-30 games, and Milton Bradley always missing 30-60 games, it'd be damn valuable to be able to insert a guy in their places who plays at a near All-Star level.

Hinske is a 1B/3B. He's poor with the glove at 3B and adequate at 1B. He probably has the best power of the group and is pretty good with taking a walk, but he also K's at a pretty high rate. It may be worth a shot.
I got nothin'.

My White Sox fan friends tell me differently about Uribe, some contend that he would have been the better option defensively than Cabrera at SS last year.

Most every defensive metric has Uribe as an above average defensive SS and 3B and an average 2B.
