2023 Team
Grown men pouting about a team signing a player on their team to an extension is a weird look.

Are you kidding?

Didn’t you know that Jed was just keeping his powder dry during the off-season and was green lighted to spend over $785 MM for in season trade / extensions. Yeah. Right.

Now those guys can focus on how someone’s cousin’s friend neighbor heard that Ohtani is already wearing Cubs blue at home as he’s prepares for free agency next season - Yup, it’s going to happen - the rumor, not the Cubs signing

I mean, complain about the cubs but honestly Correa was the one everyone wanted and now Boras indicating they might talk to other teams. Seems like the cubs may have been right on this. Turner was gone and was anyone really dying for Xander?

Correa is a stud. He may not get over $300 MM contract but he will still likely be a foundational cornerstone to build a perineal playoff team over next 4 - 7 years.

Correa must be a serious injury risk. He's a great player, but there's clearly something to be concerned about there.

Oh for sure. I wonder if they're seeing some deterioration to the repairs made previously in these physicals, and thus they figure an additional surgery may be in the future. Or maybe he's fine now but with an injury such as that they simply foreshadow less mobility past a certain age. Seemingly that's less of a concern if he moves to third, but it also may be part of why the Astros didn't try harder to keep him, who knows. The Twins deal was for 3 years max, so if it's a deterioration thing, less of a concern for them when they signed him a year ago.

To me the issue is if this was the Cubs' top guy and they couldn't come close to affording him. The leg thing seems to have been a surprise to the Giants and to a lesser degree the Mets, whose owner was stupid to speak publicly about the deal and perhaps to take the deal knowing the Giants had medical concerns post physical. So I don't know if you can say the Cubs were right about Correa, unless his time on the IL was concerning to them in general. Swanson has been very healthy, so perhaps that was a factor, but I can't imagine they keyed to a leg injury from his time in the minors.

That said, I'm happy to not be in this mess, and I'm probably more of a fan of the Swanson signing than most. It's just also hard to look at Cohen's "it's just money" approach to ownership and not be envious. Or the Dodgers bringing in Mookie and then Freeman.

If the Cubs sign Trevor Bauer - I’ll stop going to Wrigley Field. Yup, Bauer might still be a better starter than most of the Cubs rotation but I don’t need to spend cash on an organization that would support that garbage

Some team will sign him and he’ll likely have a good year but there are limits.

Cubs have already pushed those limits with Russell and Chapman so they’ve already down 2 strikes - each of those incidents weren’t as clear as Bauer’s and each of them went through sanctioned treatment unlike Bauer who as I understand it initially agreed to treatment then declined / didn’t complete it.

I honestly don't see any MLB team taking a chance on him. Not only is he sentient garbage, but he's been on the shelf for 2 years. That's not a great risk to take even at the league minimum salary while undoubtedly pissing off a large % of your fanbase forever.

I agree on both Bauer takes, I couldn't get over the Cubs signing him and I don't think anyone will. In addition to him being shelved for so long and being a POS, it would be a mess from a PR and press coverage standpoint and the players would hate that.

I can see the Cards signing him

Hard to imagine anyone signing him to my mind too. Love to see him get no offers.
