Patrick Mooney speculating on CSN that Baez may be a September call-up (Soler too).  He also says no chance on Bryant.

This is not some silly theory that's unsupported and deserves being mocked by photos of Xena.  [Image: ITgoyeg.png]

If they are going to call either or both of them up, they may not wait until September.  If trades open up roster spots, there's no real reason to wait.  Even if not, some guys could get DFA'd to make room.

Why would they do that though?  Why give up a year of control on those guys?

I guess it doesn't make sense to me to lose the year of control when we are probably one more full year away from being very competitive.  Unless they feel that both these guys are ready and there is nothing left for them to gain down in AA and AAA.

I know I've explained this to you before, but Soler is on a MLB contract.  He's a free agent after 2020 no matter what.

As for Baez, I think they came into the year expecting him to be called up at some point after the Super Two deadline.  The only question is whether they would use his slow start to delay that by a year.  I've been assuming the answer was yes.  Signs are starting to point to no.

I forgot about the contract of Soler.  I know that has been said before.  As for Baez, I would just rather they wait and get the extra year of control.  But, the FO knows much more about their plan than any of us do.

Part of it with Baez might be how difficult they expect it will be to sign him long-term.  The problem with Bryant is that, because Boras is his agent, he's likely to test free agency.  If Boras wasn't his agent, he might be in the majors now.  If they think they'll be able to work out a long-term deal with Baez, that makes it easier to call him up.

Agreed on that. From what I've read, Baez may be more eager to sign a long-term deal and give his family some security than the average 21 year old (mother and sister have dealt with major health issues). Bryant, on the other hand, is testing the market no matter what we offer him.

Also worth noting with all of the offensive performance is that Jen-Ho Tseng improved to 5-0 with a 2.50 ERA tonight for Kane County, giving up just 1 hit in 6 shutout innings.

Underwood is also quietly looking pretty good this year.

Is "locking up" minor leaguers even a thing? Why is this a good idea?

It is increasingly becoming a thing and it basically is a sharing of the risk. The player gets less than if he had signed after proving himself at the MLB level.

However, I wasn't talking about necessarily locking up Baez now.  My point was more with respect to what the expectations are in terms of whether they'll be able to sign him long-term after a year or 2 in the majors, as was done with Rizzo and Castro.  Those deals will usually cover at least the first year of free agency.
