I do think the Cubs could win the Central fairly easily in 2021 by just bringing back the same team, but there's such a large chasm between them and the elite teams in the NL that maybe it's time for a rebuild/retool. Like several have already said, though, Darvish was likely our best trade piece...and this was the best return they could get for him? Wow. I wish I could have something to look forward to when it comes to baseball...I mean, just being back inside Wrigley would be great (can we hurry the fuck up with the vaccines already?)...but this team is going to be uninspiring at best. The fucking White Sox are going to steal a lot of attention the next couple of years, that's for sure...

It also seems like the Ricketts have lost interest in owning a baseball team and are more interested in being real estate developers. They really sold the fans a bill of goods when they took over. 2016 is starting to feel far away...

The Ricketts are involved in finance (Ameritrade), real estate (Wrigleyville developments), politics (Gov of Nebraska. RNC Finance Chair, etc), gambling (new venture SPAC called Marquee Raine), and media (Marquee/Sinclair).
Cubs are integral to the real estate, media and perhaps gambling ventures and influential to other ventures but Ricketts other ventures are still most likely driving the decisions.
Yeah, the Cubs are the highest profile venture - and only piece of the puzzle that most Cub fans are interested - but without understanding how all the entities are connected/funded/managed, it's difficult to forecast what the impact on Cubs financing. Yes, Ricketts sunk a ton a cash into Wrigley neighborhood real estate but no clue what covenants are ruling that venture and if they are connected to Cubs funding. Hell, who would have ventured that a year into their media venture launch, Cubs would significantly decrease payroll making media venture less valuable?
Haven't seen it yet but awaiting Trumpers come out and say that Cubs decreased payroll (traded Yu and let Schwarber walk) due to Biden winning election. Of course, that would assume that Trumpers would admit that Biden won the election. Oh what fun times we live in!

I honestly don't know how Tom can go out there and continue to play the misunderstood owner. Maybe he's mad at being cast at the lovable idiot owner in the stands with the big glasses those first few years? He's really making up for it.

Kind of feels like Tom would spend a lot more money if his dad wasn't around.
That's not an invitation for someone on here to assassinate him or something, just an observation.

Tom's the smiling, good guy face of the conglomerate. Shouldn't expect any changes after his father is no longer in business

Yeah, I no longer really buy that he's the innocent one being directed by his mean dad. Starting to think they all just kind of suck.

Sounds like the Cubs got Jon (Boog) Sciambi to replace Len. Don't know much about him, but I like him from his ESPN work, he has a fun energy. Some good news for a change.

I've only heard him call a couple games and wasn't overly impressed, but I admit I'm negatively biased against ESPN guys, so I'm willing to give him a fresh chance. However, up until today, I've been thinking about just going with the radio instead of the full MLB.tv package...and I'm still not sure. Maybe I'll wait and pirate stream a few games first.

I'm not sure I can place him, but Cubs Twitter seems overwhelmingly pleased by this news.

Great, another NY guy that the Marquee overlords can relate to, and not actual Cubs fans.
I don't hate the guy, but this seems like a mistake.

So, is Desipio's schtick now to just bitch and moan endlessly? I used to think he was hilarious, now he's just kind of a whiny douchebag.

Seems like it. I had to stop listening to their Pointless Exercise podcast after Andy and Fels turned it into something akin to Barstool meets Deadspin.
