Has Jackson been slumping? I check the Smokies website every so often, but it seems like I haven't seen his name on Kid's scorecards for awhile.

Yes, slumping. OPS is down to .849 after a ridiculous start at AA.

Does it really hurt us to trot him out there every 5th day for the rest of the year? Give him Lilly's spot in the rotation and let him get lit up or let him succeed.

I'm with Runnys. Its not going to make a lick of difference if he pitches for us this year. Who gives a flying fuck?

You never know mate. I would like to read a recent scouting report about him though.

You know, his peripherals aren't as bad as I thought. His strikeouts are finally up where they should be, his BB/9 are up there, but his WHIP is pretty decent so he's not allowing hits. I would like to know that his change up is working for him or that he has control of his splitter before he is given a shot in the big leagues again though.

Yep, his hits/9 is a big improvement, but he is still walking too many batters. I think the one area that he's improved in which may or may not be misleading is in giving up HR. Only 4 in 58 IP seems very fluky to me. His WHIP is still too high (1.3 ain't that impressive) for me to get excited. If he ever starts serving up HR at the rate that he used to, those BB are really going to hurt him.

I'm still not a fan, not even close.

Must have been whenever he was promoted to AAA (Cubs did same thing with Chen). I guess they figure he's got a better shot of making the show out of the pen.

Minor league pitcher of the year update

<!--quoteo-->QUOTE <!--quotec-->Chris Archer ended his first month at Double-A by allowing one hit over six innings as the Tennessee Smokies blanked the Mississippi Braves, 4-0, to salvage a split of their doubleheader.

The 21-year-old right-hander struck out five to improve to 4-1 in five Southern League starts. He's yet to allow an earned run over 28 1/3 innings since a promotion from Class A Advanced Daytona.

Archer's only blemish in Sunday's nightcap was a leadoff single by Yasser Gomez in the bottom of the first. After Tyler Pastornicky sacrificed, Archer got Eric Duncan and Jesus Sucre to ground out to strand Gomez at third.

Sucre reached on a throwing error in the fourth but was caught stealing one batter later.

The 2006 fifth-round pick did not encounter another significant threat until the sixth, when Pastornicky and Duncan reached with one out. Archer retired Sucre on a popout, then ended his night by striking out Michael Daniel.

Marcos Mateo fanned two in a perfect seventh to nail down Tennessee's ninth shutout of the season.

The last time Archer allowed an earned run was June 22 with Daytona. He didn't earn a win until his sixth Florida State League but won five straight starts and was 7-1 with a 2.86 ERA at the time of his promotion.

Archer has gone at least five innings in all five starts for Tennessee. He allowed three hits over 5 2/3 scoreless innings against West Tenn to win his Double-A debut before taking the loss against Jacksonville on July 7. Since then, the North Carolina native is 3-0 with 15 strikeouts, seven walks and a 1.10 WHIP.<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->
