Can we please just end this absurd fucking Howry experiment? We finally get a great game from Aram, Demp, Lee, Alf and Soto, our biggest guns, and yet we have to sit through that 9th inning horror show?

It was a really bad outing, but I think it's been completely ignored that, at least before tonight, he's been pretty decent since he's been back.
Coming into tonight's game, he had a 1.69 ERA and a 1.250 WHIP as a Cub this season. Obviously those numbers will go up quite a bit after tonight, but for comparison's sake, Marmol has a 1.224 WHIP and Cashner has a 1.393.
This is not some silly theory that's unsupported and deserves being mocked by photos of Xena.

Small sample size. Compare him with Cashner, fine...but Marmol?

Relatively small sample size, I grant you, thought this was his 20th appearance as a Cub this season. I wasn't comparing him to Marmol to say he's 10% the pitcher Marmol is, but to show that he hasn't just had a low ERA (which can be deceiving for middle relievers since they often have to deal more with inherited runners than their own), but that he actually has done a decent job of keeping runners off base.

To put it another way, my point was the hatred of Howry has a lot more to do with the fact that people didn't want him back in the first place than it does with how he's performed (tonight notwithstanding).

Fair enough, I have to admit. I didn't realize he'd been so steady before tonight's undressing.
If the Cubs are going "all out" to get back in the race, then keeping Howry is OK, I suppose. If we start trading off people though, then it makes sense to get some young guns some experience instead.

Those stats don't show how shitty he has been in allowing inherited runners to score. I don't have the numbers in front of me, but am pretty certain that he's been good at not giving up earned runs for himself, but terrible in putting out fires. He blows and has blown all season.

50% - % of inherited runners who eventually scored on Mr Howry
Look under Reliever Pitching* IS%
http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/...o01-pitch.shtml
And he's had a grand total of 2 Holds the entire time with the Cubs (out of 20 games pitched).
Douche.

[Rappster] OK, good. But show me the big picture. And make me a list of relievers (past, present, and future) that we could acquire for the same price as Howry and would be more effective but wouldn't have the same hair color as Howry. And then make me a sandwich. And then go to fuck. [/Rappster]

I'm 100% fine with this. I'm just glad there's an actual plan in place that isn't, "Let's load up on retreads and hope we get lucky." I'm a little tired of that plan.
