Milton Bradley and Cubs agree to deal?
#31
FWIW people on NSBB are saying Levine only went as far as saying the Bradley deal was "likely to follow next week" not a "done deal" The first guy reporting it there stretched the truth a bit I think. Miles and Wittenmeyer also say the Marquis deal is close but also not done.

Rosenthal:
QUOTE The move, which is not expected to be announced until next week, would save the Cubs between $5 million-$6 million — money they could devote to the pursuit of a left-handed hitting outfielder such as their primary target, free agent Milton Bradley, a switch-hitter.

The cash going from the Cubs to the Rockies would be less than $1 million, sources say. The Rockies would take on Marquis' $9.875 million salary for next season while the Cubs would assume Vizcaino's $3.5 million obligation.

QUOTE While several sources indicated that the deal is all but completed, another source with direct knowledge of the talks said the teams have merely engaged in conversation.

QUOTE Cubs Close to Deal with Bradley, Marquis Gone?

According to CSN's David Kaplan, the Cubs are close to a multi-year deal with switch-hitting outfielder Milton Bradley.

The deal is expected to be announced next week after the new year.

The Cubs are also close to trading Jason Marquis to the Rockies for reliever Luis Vizcaino.

The Marquis deal is a done deal according to the Denver Post or some Denver newspaper anyway....We're supposedly sending a mill back in the deal, saving us 5 mill total......

And Levine also said the Peavy deal is back on and DeRosa could be dealt within the next 3 days.....

Believe any of this? No fucking clue, but it's out there anyway........Hopefully, he's right about something for once.

I'm not a fan of Bradley's persona but if we do indeed add Bradley and Peavy that will make for a solid off-season in my book.

Even last year he had a decent year. He was just killed by lefty hitters and did well against the right handed hitters. He could do well in the 7th or 8th inning eventually.

Plain and simple I don't like the way the guy pitches all that much. Like I said in another thread he could service us well in a specialty role but we can't be overconfident with this guy. If he's gold for us great but I wouldn't expect it.

If this deal does get done, I wouldnt be surprised to see Vizcaino traded for a prospect or two ASAP,in order to cut that payroll even more.
A herd of buffalo can move only as fast as the slowest buffalo. When the herd is hunted, it is the slowest and weakest ones at the back that are killed first. This natural selection is good for the herd as a whole, because the general speed and health of the whole group keeps improving by the regular killing of the weakest members.

In much the same way the human brain can only operate as fast as the slowest brain cells. Excessive intake of alcohol, we all know, kills brain cells, but naturally it attacks the slowest and weakest brain cells first. In this way regular consumption of beer eliminates the weaker brain cells, making the brain a faster and more efficient machine. That's why you always feel smarter after a few beers.

I Love the Bradley signing. Worst case for Vizcaino is 2008 Howry, best case for Vizcaino is 2006 Howry. With one year at $3.5 million and a half million buyout for next year it seems like a very good gamble to me.

Guh. He'd fit right in with Elijah Dukes and Lastings Milledge on that team.

QUOTE Nationals in serious pursuit of Bradley

By Bill Ladson / MLB.com
WASHINGTON -- Although they lost to the Yankees in the Mark Teixeira sweepstakes, the Nationals continue to look for offensive help. According to a baseball source, Washington has serious interest in free-agent outfielder Milton Bradley.

The switch-hitting Bradley, 30, played for the Rangers this past season and hit .321 with 22 home runs and 77 RBIs. He also led the American League with a .436 on-base percentage.

Bradley's presence could offset the overload of right-hand hitters in the Nationals lineup. He also would play center field. This past season, Lastings Milledge played the position, but the team believes he is better suited in left or right field. Milledge had trouble going back on fly balls and has a weak arm.

The Nationals are not the only team trying to acquire Bradley's services. The Cubs also have him on their radar. To make room on the payroll for Bradley, according to published reports, the Cubs have to shed some salary and may have taken the first step in that regard by dealing Mark DeRosa to the Indians for three prospects.

QUOTE Hendry actually has made room for switch-hitting outfielder Milton Bradley.

Bradley’s agents have asked for a three-year contract for $30 million, according to baseball sources, and it is believed the Cubs will come close to that.

The more I look at Bradley's stats (when healthy), the more I look forward to his signing.
He played in 126 games last season, which is the most since he played in 141 for LA in 2004.
I think that leads to hope that he can be healthy this season and play even more games. And we NEED his OBP, I don't think anyone can complain with .320/.436

Can he do it for a whole season playing OF in Wrigley as compared to DHing in a very hitter friendly park? I don't know.

I sure hope the fans give him a chance and don't Jaque him out too quickly.

It seems as if the Cubs have been pretty good the last couple seasons being careful with guys who have had injury problems in their careers. Lou makes sure they get their days off, so I'm pretty confident that Bradley should be ok.
And I don't see any reason why the fans would go against Bradley. He's proven that when hes healthy, he can ball. And all indications are he's healthy coming into this season, so he should be able to pick up where he left off last season (.320/.436)
