2010 Minor League Roundup

That's a nice endorsement, especially from a Card fan.
All those things are why we made him a first-round pick.

As life would have it, though, that description of him almost reads like a parody of what someone who isn't into stats would say to evaluate a player. (he's a great kid, a hard worker and has a great head on his shoulders...and does amazing things on the diamond).

I hope he continues to kick ass. It's good to see that he's taking walks, has cut down on his K's (though he's still K's once a game), and has a OBP of over .400. And I've never heard anything but praise (even awe) about his skill at playing CF.
Man, I'd love for him to work out.
I think the last decent CFer we've had was Hack Wilson.

I'm nitpicking, but our centerfielder right now has been absolutely terrific out there, and happens to be 2nd in the league in batting average, 1st in doubles, 4th in extra base hits, and 7th in total bases. Just saying(and I know he's not a long term solution, but he's been decent to say the least this season).

Shoot, Byrd has been amazing, I'll grant you that.
The thing is, the Cubs have had many, many CFer's over the years who've been kick-ass for a half-season or so. (CPatt, Lofton, etc.)
Nobody remembers Adolpho Phillips, but he was supposed to be a superstar (his manager, Leo Durocher, famously said that Phillips had more natural talent that anyone he'd seen in his 40 years of MLB baseball, except for Willie Mays.) But he was the kind of head-case that made Milton Bradley seem like Derek Jeter in comparison.

There's always a catch with the Cubs.

Anyway, Jackson gives me hope for a long-term solution.

Interestingly, Huseby is NOT being converted into a positional player - he's still a reliever; they're just giving him a chance to hit to "take his mind off" pitching.

I think they need to seriously consider converting him. I think he's reached base in every game he's hit in.

The Cubs promoted four of their Minor Leaguers on Sunday, including outfielder Brett Jackson, the team's 2009 No. 1 Draft pick, from Class A Daytona to Double-A Tennessee.
Jackson, who will play for the U.S. Team in the All-Star Futures Game, was batting .316 in 67 games with 19 doubles, eight triples, six homers and 38 RBIs.

Also promoted on from Daytona to Tennessee was right-hander pitcher Rafael Dolis, who was 4-5 with a 2.92 ERA in 14 games (13 starts). He has struck out 48 over 71 innings.

Trey McNutt, a right-handed pitcher who is 6-0 with a 1.51 ERA in 13 starts, was moved up from Class A Peoria to Daytona. McNutt has struck out 70 over 59 2/3 innings. In his last start June 16 against Burlington, he gave up one run over five scoreless innings.

Ty Wright, who has 51 RBIs in 73 games, also was promoted, moving up from Tennessee to Triple-A Iowa. He was batting .289 with 21 doubles and 10 homers.
