Ok, I know soccer is kind of boring to watch and hell, I rarely watch it myself, but how can you be so cynical? This is America doing something that it hasn't done since 1950- advancing to the next round of the biggest sports tournament in the world. The entire hallway where I work erupted when the goal went in. It's kind of a big fucking deal.

Wait. I just re-read this. Didn't Team USA make some noise in 2002 -- like the quarterfinals? What's this 1950 stuff?

This isn't the first time since 1950 that the USA has advanced to the 2nd round, but in that year the USA beat England which was a huge upset at the time.

And I stand corrected for the 1950 part. And for calling Butch cynical.

So if the US wins the whole thing, will the international soccer press mention the Cubs when referring to teams with the longest stretches without a championship?
Some men are born mediocre, some men achieve mediocrity, and some men have mediocrity thrust upon them.

Winning the group made our pairing SO much easier.

We'll play Ghana, if we win, we'll play the winner of Uruguay and South Korea.

Had we taken 2nd in the group, we'd have played Germany first, and taken on the winner of Argentina and Mexico had we won.

I got nothin'.

Yep, and I'm even more excited about this now. Winning a game or two as we did in 2002 was really special, but this team is much more well-rounded than that one, so it will mean a heck of a lot more to me. At least, if we do continue to advance, I won't look at it as simply a fluke.

I think we have a very realistic shot at getting to the semis. We won't face an Argentina, Germany, Holland, Brazil, Portugal, Italy or Spain until then. Consider me stoked.

We finished with 5 points, tied with England, with the first tie breaker being goal difference. We both had a goal difference of +1, so our winning tie breaker was having scored more goals (4 vs. 2). If we would have tied we would have had 3 points and finished behind England(5 pts) and Slovenia (4 pts). A win is worth 3 points, a draw is worth 1.

It finished like this...

Team/W-T-L/Points/Goal Difference/Goals For
USA 1-2-0.......... 5pts.. GD: +1 GF: 4
England 1-2-0.... 5 pts.. GD: +1 GF: 2
Slovenia 1-1-1... 4 pts.. GD: 0 GF: 3
Algeria 0-1-2......1 pt.... GD: -2 GF: 0

It would finish like this if we tied with Algeria 0-0...

Team/W-T-L/Points/Goal Difference/Goals For
England 1-2-0.... 5 pts.. GD: +1 GF: 2
Slovenia 1-1-1... 4 pts.. GD: 0 GF: 3
USA 0-3-0..........3 pts.. GD: 0 GF: 3
Algeria 0-2-1......2 pt.... GD: -1 GF: 0

It would finish like this if we lost to Algeria 2-0...

Team/W-T-L/Points/Goal Difference/Goals For
England 1-2-0.... 5 pts.. GD: +1 GF: 2
Algeria 1-1-1......4 pt.... GD: +1 GF: 2
Slovenia 1-1-1... 4 pts.. GD: 0 GF: 3
USA 0-2-1.......... 2pts.. GD: -2 GF: 3

It is remarkable that one goal can mean the difference between elimination and winning your group. On the other hand, that's like the last shot in tight game in an NCAA regional in hoops. Win the region or go home.
Reply
I've watched the replay of the goal probably 40 times, I can't get enough of it. I get chills just thinking about it. This will go down as one of the most memorable moments in my sports-watching life.
The thing you need to remember is that all Cardinals fans and all White Sox fans are very bad people. It's a fact that has been scientifically proven beyond a shadow of a doubt. Being a Cubs fan is the only path to rightousness and piousness. Cardinal and White Sox fans exist to be the dark, diabolical forces that oppose us. They are the yin to our yang, the Joker to our Batman, the demon to our angel, the insurgence to our freedom, the oil to our water, the club to our baby seal. Their happiness occurs only in direct conflict with everything that is pure and good in this world.

Or how winning the sixth and final game can win the BP Crosstown Cup even if the season series is tied 3-3.
This is not some silly theory that's unsupported and deserves being mocked by photos of Xena. [Image: ITgoyeg.png]
