Fire Lou
I said it when he first signed on with the Sox, and I still believe it now. Stone's #1 reason (not the only reason) for going over to the dark side was to piss us all off. Maybe his evil intentions aren't necessarily directed toward the fans in particular, but the Cubs world in general. Considering how much goodwill he had built up with most of us as recently as the 2004 season, this kinda bums me out.

I'm amazed at how fast I went from defending him to hating him.

Stone? Yeah, me too. He was a big part of my fandom, especially back in the '80s and I'll never forget how I felt about him then...but that does nothing to ameliorate the asshole he's become. I was in total support of him in '04. It didn't have to sour me on him when he left or even when he went to the Sox. It's down to the way he's handled things. He's made an ass of himself.

FWIW, I think Piniella's comments regarding Stone's post-playing career may suggest that he HAS been offered jobs but that that he prefers being a cigar-chewing know-it-all than never has to put his ass on the line.

Stone mentioned on the Score a few times yesterday that he actually had been offered several coaching and management type jobs over the years, yet he turned them all down. The only role Stone has ever wanted in baseball other than blowhard is as a part owner. He's been denied a couple of times over the years.

He'd be "hands-on." Can you imagine having the phone ring every time a "part owner" has an opinion about who should be in the lineup?

So he says. Maybe he's being truthful, but I take his claims regarding his career with a grain of salt. He simply would have rather been a weekly commentator on local Chicago sports radio? I call bullshit. Of course instead of letting it die he's yapping all over the Score about it. The man's ego knows no bounds.

I have no doubt that he makes far more money as the White Sox analyst than he'd make as a pitching coach.

Maybe. But I was referring to his four year stint as The Score's resident "Baseball Expert". There's no way a half hour interview with him 2-3 times a week on local sports talk radio paid more than a coaching position.

There were only three years where he wasn't calling games every day and he also had side gigs during that time with ESPN. I'd bet he was still making better than coaching money for those three seasons.

Heyman says that Bobby Valentine may be interested in managing the Cubs if the job becomes available (likely wouldn't accept the Orioles job). He goes on to suggest that it would make more sense to hire Valentine and make Sandberg a bench coach.

I think there needs to be a clause in there stating he has to wear the mustache and glasses disguise no less than once per series.

Yeah, I think all these managers get tempted by the chance to be the one that finally leads us to a title. Then they get here and think "Why the fuck did I take this job?"
