Plus Towers already said he doesn't want to do that. He thinks a player won't perform like they're capable of and can't focus on just playing ball if they know they're going to be traded soon. Peavy's going to be on another team before the season starts, or he's going to be a Padre for the whole season.

Pretty much. I don't think I've clamored for Peavy as much as he did for Roberts. I've just pretty much posted every article there is on Peavy.

"He still has a preference for the National League. But Anaheim, as we've said in the past, always had a little bit of a leg up on a lot of American League teams just because of geography."

Peavy could commute from his home in the San Diego area to Angels Stadium, just as Padres manager Bud Black did when he was the Angels' pitching coach. But at the moment, the subject is closed.

"If it heats up, nobody is going to know it," Padres GM Kevin Towers said. "As of right now, we're not talking to anybody. And we don't plan on calling anybody.

"Talking to Barry, he'd rather not be involved in it. We had put him and Jake in a tough spot. (Team president) Sandy (Alderson), Barry and I all agreed, the less we talk, the better to insulate them from the process.

"We've got a pretty good idea which teams that Jake would maybe consider. If they call, we'll listen to what they have to say. If it's enticing enough, we'll approach Barry and Jake."<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->

The Padres have been close to deals with the Cubs and Braves this offseason, but in the end San Diego's asking price was just too high. They'll have to lower it for a deal to get done and that doesn't appear likely. Maybe a new team could sweep in and woo them.

FWIW, some guy from the San Diego media told Kap a few days ago that the Cubs and Padres are still talking but the Padres aren't being near as open to the media this time around.

Any dealings that is done from now on between the Cubs and the Padres will have to be under the radar. Both sides will have to make concessions and involving the media doesn't make sense during those types of negotiations. My guess is they will work on it for a while and then close to ST we get word if they are close to a sound deal or not. I doubt highly that Peavy will stay a Padres going into the new season. Padres don't have any real reason to keep him around at this point.

According to Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun-Times, "those close to Jim Hendry expect him to restart the Jake Peavy talks" now that the Cubs have unloaded salary with the Jason Marquis trade. Hendry admitted yesterday he hopes to add another pitcher before Opening Day.

Wittenmyer notes that the Cubs' 2010 payroll was unaffected by the recent moves, so Hendry would need a nod from the new ownership group before taking on Peavy's contract. The new ownership could be in place with just enough time for the Cubs to swing a Peavy deal, Wittenmyer believes.

As alternatives, Wittenmyer suggests Braden Looper and Tim Redding would fit better financially than Derek Lowe. Dave van Dyck wonders if Andy Pettitte could be a fit. Bob Klapisch says the Mets have considered Pettitte.<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->
