The Rule V Draft - Ace - 12-10-2008

It's tomorrow. I could see the Cubs taking a reliever or a bench guy on the chance we move a few of our pieces during the offseason.

I also would guess that there will be fewer picks than usual. I know it's a tiny amount of money relative to a team's budget, but this year, it might seem like an easy way to trim a superfluous cost.

Donnie Veal seems to be our only quality player who might be selected by some smaller market club who thinks they can stick him in the pen for a year a la Andy Sisco.

The Pirates took Veal.

And they're bad enough to try and keep him on the roster all season, great.

The Rule V Draft - Andy - 12-11-2008

I guess I'm not too worried. The Cubs haven't really had anyone that great taken from them as a Rule 5.

Oakland has taken catcher Yusuf Carter from the Cubs in the AAA portion.

I know you remember Sisco. Let's hope we don't have to deal with that crap again.

Although wasn't X a big driver of that? Maybe we'll be ok

The Brewers took P Mark Holliman from the Cubs in the AAA portion.

I don't think we have to worry about Veal ever amounting to anything ever, and especially with the Pirates.

That's exactly who I was implying. Sisco went to the Royals and was meh. Good for Veal for getting a shot with the Pirates after proving he wasn't good enough to advance beyond AA for the Cubs.

<!--quoteo-->QUOTE <!--quotec-->In the Rule 5 draft, the Cubs lost once highly touted lefty Donnie Veal to the Pittsburgh Pirates. They're also completing a trade with the Reds, who will send the Cubs pitcher David Patton, whom they took in the Rule 5<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Patton has never pitched above high A. He's a middle reliever. I'm not sure how he's going to fit.

The Rule V Draft - ColoradoCub - 12-11-2008

David Patton Stats

Weird... he seems to have decent control and strikeout ability but appears to be quite hittable, though not very susceptible to the HR. I guess he'll get a shot in our pen.

The Rule V Draft - Coldneck - 12-11-2008

24 years old. never played above A ball. righthander. This dude won't make it past the first cut in spring training. maybe he's hendry's nephew or something.

The Rule V Draft - Quinn - 12-11-2008

If he's traded, he doesn't have to stay in the big leagues, right? Or does he? Didn't we do this with the Reds the other way last year and it worked out well for them?

Yeah, Josh Hamilton worked out pretty well for them, but he also played in the majors the entire season (except for some rehab time).
