Artist of the Week - bz - 01-05-2009 The British graffiti artist known only as Banksy has been subject to much delight from fans and anguish from city officials and those that think he is a nuisance. He is supposedly from Britain around Bristol, where his works first started appearing on public walls in the early 90's. While his works were first seen as a nuisance, recent attempts by city officials to remove his works have been subject to protest by fans of his most prominent pieces. He works with word play and visual pun, creating ironic and funny images out of seemingly normal surfaces. Here are some examples: His works range from simple humor to highly political. Although he dislikes the gallery system, his works have started to be sold for upwards of 500K, with a collaboration between him and Damien Hirst going for 1.8Mil in auction. Artist of the Week - rok - 01-05-2009 What he did when he tampered with the Paris Hilton cover art on hundreds of CDs made me a fan of his forever. I've got a couple of books on him. Interesting character. For those that hadn't heard this story, Banksy swapped out abot 500 Paris Hilton CD's in store and replaced it with doctored versions with songs titled "Why am I famous?" and "What am I good for?". He even put the barcodes from the original CD on his forgeries so that they could still be purchased. A lot of people ended up buy fake CDs.
