Slumdog Millionaire - MrSheps - 02-03-2009
I haven't seen that many movies this year, I'm a tv person, but I thought this one was damn near a perfect film. I hear In Bruges is also really good and will check it out, but if Slumdog cleans up at the Oscars I'll be happy. It's a little bit different and a lot of fun. I heard it was too sad from a lot of people, and there is definitely some tough stuff in it, but overall I think it's a special movie that conjures up a bunch of different emotions, happy and sad. I just think it's a pretty special film, one of the best I've seen in years. Anyone else see it?
Slumdog Millionaire - Butcher - 02-03-2009
Haven't seen it, but I like Boyle (I just watched Millions on IFC the other night -- seems to be a theme for Boyle) and I've heard nothing but good things about it. I'm probably going to have to wait for video cuz it's hard to get out to the theater all that much at this stage of my life.
And In Bruges is quite good.

Slumdog is a fantastic film. i loved every minute of it. i wouldn't necessarily say it's sad. i'd say eye opening. I was quite bored during In Bruges. it was well acted and a decent story, but I didn't think it was great.

Ok, just got done watching it. I definitely enjoyed it a lot. Although it doesn't feel like it from the trailers, this has all the elements of a Boyle film (poverty, crime, betrayal, riches, lots of loud music), just in a foreign setting. Parts of it were difficult for me to follow because of the accents, so even subtitles for the English portions would have been helpful. The quiz show element provides a nice way for the plot to unfold in flashbacks and this provides plenty of drama. Anyway, it really is a well made film, and pretty much is a throwback to the old classics in terms of how the story and characters develop, the love story and especially how the film concludes. And let me say, the final 20-30 minutes were great, even the sappy parts. I personally don't consider this is a modern classic or anything, but easily one of the better films I've seen in a few years.
4/5 stars.

I think that's a very good review, I'd agree with it all. One other thing, the music is awesome. I never notice music in most movies, except for a really good score, but the music in this one stood out for me, particularly the first couple of songs and the one at the end. Anyway, I'll have to give it some time and see it again a year or two from now to decide if it goes on my modern classic list.

it had a rhythm to it, if that's possible.a great rhythm, i worried at first it would get repetitive but it didn't. i agree about the accents, they were hard to pick up sometimes but scene for scene boyle seemed to try to top himself. this was the kind of movie where i actually marveled at how he shot certain scenes and the visual imagery he was able to conger up. the story and acting were pretty top notch too. it reminded me just a little of "city of god", it also reminded me that foreigners have made at least as many "great" movies as we have in recent memory. "city of god", "life is beautiful", "pan's labyrinth", almodovar's stuff and hundreds more i'm sure.
i definitely like more foreign horror films than american ones but watching this i couldn't help but think of the movies i'm going to think of years from now as great ones from this era and in even my limited viewing capacity i think foreigners may have even made more of the standout flicks than we have. i know it's just our country i'm comparing to the rest of the moviemaking world but we have hollywood. we're supposed to be the shit and instead a talking chihuahua makes bank.

Anyway, I think that part was appropriate given the Bollywood tradition, and I'm guessing that was Boyle's way of saying thank you to India for letting him film the entire movie there. Plus, I'm sure it helped a lot in marketing the film to the local market there.

I hadn't thought of it like that, I just found it odd when I first saw it, I guess it makes sense now.
