I think Willie Harris as a 2B would be awesome, esepcially if Miles\Fotenote don't cut it.

If we are in the mood for a 2b, why not just sign Orlando Hudson?

You *know* Hendry is in the mood for a 2B...

Hudson would be awesome and much, much better than Harris.

So would Durham. Or how about signing Cabrera for SS and moving Theriot to 2nd to split time with Fontenot.

Didn't Durham retire?

I don't think so.

Nationals have too many players - Gad - 02-13-2009

He said he was considering retirement because the only offers he has received thus far are minor league deals. I'm sure if someone stepped up and offered him a guaranteed deal and chance to play for a contender he'd happily accept.

Nationals have too many players - Clapp - 02-13-2009

I really don't think they're adding more than a couple million on the payroll before the season starts, nor should they. Save it. See what's out there at the deadline since they'll be in first place then anyway. There's no glaring needs now but there's likely to be then, whether it be due to injury or a big disappointment somewhere.

I'm quite sure we're going to need another starting pitcher. We are counting on Marshall and Harden to pitch full seasons and I don't think either on will have 25 starts. I'm not excited about seeing Heilman or Gaudin every 5th day.

And there's sure to be a few good options at the deadline, there's not now.

I dunno, I think we're pretty weak up the middle. I'd love to see an upgrade at SS, 2B, or CF.

You're upset that we would have to see Heilman or Gaudin after Zambrano, Dempster, Lilly, and Harden/Marshall? Really?

We have a million starter options behond the four sure-fire starters we have.

Aaron Heilman
Chad Gaudin
Jeff Samardzija
Mitch Atkins
Angel Guzman

Starting pitching is exactly what we do NOT need. We have 10 of them and almost all of them are better than what most teams have in the 5th spot in their rotation.

Even if both Harden and Marshall are out, Gaudin is comparable to what Marquis brings as a starter and while Heilman is a question mark as a starter, we have a pretty good shot at getting a capable 5th starter out of Samardzija and Atkins.

I'm with Ruby personally. While I don't think we can land a starter for one of those positions, I would love to get a very strong defensive player for SS.

I think in general Gaudin is pretty overrated here. I don't really see him as a viable starter.

The last 2 years as a starter he he went 14-15 on a bad A's team with a 4.32 ERA in 235.3 innings pitched, in the American League. He made 34 starts and threw 199.3 innings in 07 with a 4.42 ERA in the AL. Then this last year, 3-2 with a 3.75 ERA in 6 starts. That would be pretty damn good for a #5 starter and better than Marquis did the last 2 years. I don't see how he's overrated around here and why he can't be a legitimate option. I'd probably feel safest with him over any of the other options.
