July 2nd-12th - ruby23 - 06-30-2009

Could make or break this season. 4 with both the Brewers and Cardinals at home (with a Braves series in between). It could be the turnaround or it could be doomsday.

Or we could go .500 against them and things would stay the same.

That's about what I expect since we will be at home.

If they were road games then things might get ugly.

And the pain will continue. I just want a jumpstart or someone to take them to the woodshed, this middling shit is driving me crazy.

Yeah this season feels like a hybrid of 2005 and 2007. Unsatisfying in almost every way yet we somehow manage to stay in the race.

July 2nd-12th - Fella - 06-30-2009

Yeah it feels very much like 2005 to me.

That's cause it is 2005 all over again.

I think 2003 - 2006 were the worst consecutive years of baseball I have experienced in my life. Sure, I've lived through far more horrendous Cubs teams over 4-year spans, but man...we got kicked in the balls a lot over those 4 seasons.

2003 -- 5 outs away, then total collapse. A lot of fun for a lot of reasons, but the ending was so brutal, it's all I really remember.
2004 -- Injuries, underachieving, etc. leave us battling for the Wild Card spot. We suck complete ass in the last 10 games of the season and miss the postseason. The Sosa debacle. The Red Sox end their drought, leaving us and the White Sox alone in our misery.
2005 -- 79-83. Burnitz ushers in the post-Sammy era. The White Sox end their drought, leaving us entirely alone in our misery (and alone to deal with endless amounts taunting).
2006 -- 66-96. The Juan Pierre era. A thoroughly mediocre Cardinals team (83 wins) wins the World Series.

2007 and 2008 ended badly, but I enjoyed both seasons. And the exits from the postseason weren't nearly as painful as 2003.

July 2nd-12th - rok - 06-30-2009

The thing about 2007, and the reason why I even brought it up in regard to this season, were because I didn't feel we were good enough until the final month. That's the only hope I have, is that this season turns into 2007 and not 2005.

July 2nd-12th - Fella - 06-30-2009

We were amazing in June and July 2007, best team in baseball over that span. By the end of June I felt like we were going to win the division. Not this year.

July 2nd-12th - alpha - 06-30-2009

Probable pitchers

02/07 Dempster vs Mclung
03/07 Zambrano vs Suppan
04/07 Harden vs Looper
05/07 Lilly vs Burns
06/07 Wells vs Jurrjens
07/07 Dempster vs Vazquez
08/07 Zambrano vs Kawakami

10/07 Harden vs Carpenter
11/07 Lilly vs Wainwright
12/07 Wells vs Wellmeyer
12/07 Dempster vs Piniero/Thompson

A couple of breaks in the first two series as we miss Gallardo, Lowe and Hanson. Also the Cardinals play the Brewers from 6th-8th and the outcome of that series could help us. Interesting time ahead for the Cubs before the ASB.

July 2nd-12th - leonardsipes - 06-30-2009

The 2003 exit was bad, but at the time the blow was softened by the belief that the Cubs were going to be even better in '04. The Nomar trade at the deadline was the peak. After that it was a decent into hell. From the 2002-03 off season through the trade deadline in '04 was a kick ass stretch of GMing. Unfairly, I think, Theo Esptein has come out of that era as the golden boy. Hendry, it seems, has gone to shit.

July 2nd-12th - Fella - 06-30-2009

Yeah by the trade deadline in 2004 I thought Hendry was truly amazing, he got Karros/Grudz and Lee and Ramirez/Lofton and Nomar and Maddux, all for cheap or good value, he could do no wrong.

Its just too bad he took the 04-05 and 05-06 off-seasons off.

The ending of 2003 obviously sucked, but that year ranks as one of the best years I've ever had has a Cubs fan. 2004 and 2005 were hands down, 2 of the worst and this season is getting close to matching those.
