Division leaders and R/L/S lineups - Butcher - 09-08-2009 Just out of curiosity, because our entire offseason was based on handedness, I looked to see which potential playoff teams (I only looked at current division leaders) have the most balance in their lineup this season. It's the Yankees, by far. I don't know if it truly means anything (as far as postseason success), but they have 4 switch-hitters and 3 lefties in their lineup. Detroit has the least balanced lineup (one lefty, no switch-hitters). LAA -- 5 R, 1 L, 3 S PHI -- 3 R, 3 L, 2 S STL -- 6 R, 2 L LAD -- 4 R, 2 L, 2 S That Yankees lineup is just ridiculous, by the way. They could have all 9 hitters hit 20 homers by the end of the season (Cabrera is bringing up the rear with 12 -- he'd have to go on a tear). 1-8 are pretty much there already (Jeter is on 17). As a team, they are hitting .283/.362/.481. How ridiculous is that? To put that into perspective, our team his hitting .253/.328/.412. I know -- the DH bumps theirs up, but not by that much. Also, the Yanks' lineup OPS+ is 120. We have two hitters in our lineup with an OPS+ equal to or better than that (Lee and Ramirez). Division leaders and R/L/S lineups - rok - 09-08-2009 That line looks a lot like that of our 2008 team. The bottom of our lineup is a complete joke these days. Division leaders and R/L/S lineups - kbwsb - 09-08-2009 Wait, our team OBP is below league average this year? Shocker. So that makes 6 of 7 Hendry seasons that our OBP has sucked. The one time it was good, we won 97 games. I think Jim's job is safe, though. This is a sport that employs Trey Hillman and Dusty Baker in important, high-profile jobs. It'll probably be 2025 before those type of guys are extinct in the game. I don't think Hendry will be around next season, but that's only because I believe Ricketts wants to put his own stamp on this franchise -- not necessarily because Ricketts thinks he sucks. That's just my opinion. I just feel strongly about an offense not making outs, which is what OBP means. Don't make a fucking out, because stats have proven that there is a cement-like correlation between not making outs and scoring runs. Besides, being a lifelong Cub fan, I'm all too aware that Jim's successor could easily be worse. Much worse, if Ricketts makes a poor choice. At least Jim is capable of making a good trade here and there, of inspiring serious loyalty from his stars, and of convincing big-time FA's to sign with Chicago. None of those plusses should be taken lightly; he has some genuine strengths as a GM.
