<!--quoteo-->QUOTE <!--quotec-->The Cubs are shutting down Rich Harden for the rest of the year. Harden, who has struggled with his command the last three starts, including Wednesday's 71-pitch, three-inning outing, is being replaced in the rotation.

Manager Lou Piniella said Tom Gorzelanny would replace Harden in his next start on Monday and the Cubs would make plans afterwards.<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->

<!--quoteo-->QUOTE <!--quotec-->Chicago Cubs manager Lou Piniella said Thursday that right-handed pitcher Rich Harden will miss his start on Monday and possibly a second start on Sept. 26 in San Francisco.Piniella said the team is giving Harden a rest, and that there's nothing physically wrong with the pitcher, who is coming off two substandard starts.<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->

So, has he thrown his last pitch as a Cub? I think we offer arb (assuming he really isn't seriously injured) and hope he declines.

What a pathetic end to his time here. Harden has frustrated me more than any Cub this season, even more than Soriano and Bradley.

And of course, now there's no clear option for how we'll deal with his free agency. So Cub-like.

We let him walk. I can't deal with all the uncertainty.

I think the fact that they're shutting him down indicates they plan to bring him back. Why not send him out there if he won't be back?

He's been declining. That's why he's benched.

You mean bring him back next season? I sure hope not.

We'll bring him back after we trade Z.

I was watching the Brewers broadcast last night and he never threw harder than 88 MPH and was sitting around 85 MPH. I definitely think there is something wrong. No I am begining to question whether we should offer his arbitration at the end of the year.

Yeah. If he's not injured, where's the downside for the Cubs in sending him out there unless you think he could be pitching for you next year?

Because they're still alive in the wild card and Harden has sucked

No reason to think getting Esmailin Caridad a start will help that.

Now we see why the A's didnt mind trading him for crap.

Harden Shut Down? - Coldneck - 09-25-2009

He has been shut down. And Lou's quotes make it sound like he won't be back next year.

<!--quoteo-->QUOTE <!--quotec-->Harden to sit out rest of season
Associated Press

SAN FRANCISCO -- Rich Harden is done for the season.

The Chicago Cubs right-hander requested that he not pitch again this season, manager Lou Piniella said Thursday night before the game against the San Francisco Giants.

"He doesn't want to pitch and we respect his wishes," Piniella said. "I spoke with him briefly and he's not going to pitch any more. He's done a real nice job here and the staff has done a nice job of keeping him nice and healthy."

Harden, who has been limited to long toss after complaining of some arm fatigue, has struggled with high pitch counts and failed to make it past the fifth inning in his last four starts.

Eligible for free agency after the World Series, Harden lasted three innings last Wednesday night against the Milwaukee Brewers. He is 9-9 with a 4.09 ERA in 26 starts.

Harden said he was healthy and would have stayed in the rotation had the Cubs remained in contention for a playoff spot. He said it was a precautionary matter.

"We want to thank him for his contributions," Piniella said.

Harden has a career record of 50-29 with a 3.39 ERA since making his debut with the Oakland Athletics in 2003.

He's stayed healthy in Chicago, making 51 starts in his two years with the Cubs after being limited to a combined 13 starts in his last two years with the A's.

Harden has recorded 783 strikeouts in 753 2/3 innings.<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->
