This has to be the guy who I am least excited about. He had an OK year last season, but his career avg. and whiff numbers are not appealing to me.

This popped up in the Dye thread, but to me, Gomes is at least as good an option as Dye. Neither can field worth a damn.

I'll take Dye's post-season experience, and good clubhouse presence as a trump card over Gomes any day.

So you'd take the older player with the clearly inferior stats last year (which were cratering by year end, by the way) over the younger guy with much better stats, who hit a pro rated 40 home runs last year?

I don't JG as an ideal fit for this club. I mean we are talking about a guy who was in AAA last year (and for parts of 2008). There is a reason for that. He had a nice run last year, with those 40 prorated HRs, but that's just it, they didn't really happen. Plus, if you pro-rate him 40 hrs, you better pro-rate him 200 strikeouts. Mark Bellhorn v.2.
Not to mention, Gomes' health history isn't exactly sparkling. That includes a heart attack.
And yes, Dye is "aging" but I still feel his post-season history would be a big factor for this club (if we can get there). He wouldn't be relied on to be a full-time starter for us, and I'm sure that would help slow down the aging process. Yes, I guess his 162 game stats would be worse than Gomes, but that can be attributed to a subpar 2nd half.
