Erik Bedard - Runnys - 02-06-2010

If we went and watched Sheets, Noah Lowry, and whoever else then why didn't we give Bedard a look? He just signed with Seattle for a one year contract for 1.5 million. It has incentives that could make it 7.5 million or so, but that would be a good thing if Seattle has to pay him that much.

I know he probably wouldn't have been ready until midseason, but hey, it would have been like trading for an All-Star

Seriously though, why didn't we consider him at all? Seems like just the type of project Hendry loves and IF he could have come in at midseason that could have been huge for our rotation.

Oh well.

BTW, I can't wait until February 14th. Pitchers and Catchers report....yippeeeeeeeee!

Erik Bedard - kbwsb - 02-06-2010

Bedard is a chode, but you're right, he seems like the type of rehab/high ceiling guy that Jim usually likes to give a try. I would have liked the move.

Erik Bedard - ruby23 - 02-06-2010

He might not even be able to pitch until after the ASB.

Erik Bedard - rok - 02-06-2010

I wouldn't have minded him at $1.5 mil because he probably still has a lot left IMO, but he isn't quite the type of mentally tough pitcher that we should be relying on for much aside from a few flashes of brilliance in between his DL stints.

I understand that, but for 1.5 million I think it would have been worth a shot. Hell, we paid Dempster that to not pitch for a year IIRC.

And if he's remotely healthy or successful, the M's are gonna be paying him way more than that. The Cubs could have paid him $1.5 M to not pitch; but if he did anything decent(which would be the whole idea in the first place), they'd be on the hook way more than that.

So what was the downside? We pay 1.5 million and get nothing or we pay 7 million and get a stud for the 2nd half of the year. Again, i don't see what the downside would have been. If you are paying him a decent salary that means that he came back healthy and pitched well.

The downside is that there isn't $7 M (it's actually around $8.5 M) to spend in the first place. You can't pay someone with $$$ that doesn't exist. If the Cubs had an extra $7 M laying around, they wouldn't be going into the season with Sloth and King Hippo fighting for the 5th spot in the rotation.
