Cuban Ball Players

<!--quoteo-->QUOTE <!--quotec-->RHP Juan Yasser Serrano may have signed a $250,000 contract with the Chicago Cubs. Cuban Ball Players cannot confirm the validity of this rumor. Serrano pitched for the Villa Clara Orangemen in the Cuban League.<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Has this guy been on our radar at all?

And you'd also have to believe that $250k (if true) for a Cuban defector would be a fairly tiny sum if he had a ton of upside, at least compared to other recent defectors.

Juan Yasser Serrano? - funkster - 03-03-2010

There's gotta be some upside to him right? I mean the Cubs wouldn't possibly be dumb enough to sign a player without looking at his stats and simply believing the word of his agent? lmao.

Juan Yasser Serrano? - jstraw - 03-03-2010

Probably some Dominican scrub an agent dumped in the drink 50 yards from Miami Beach, yelling "WHEN YOU HIT THE BEACH, START HOLLERING 'AMERICA, I LOVE JOO!!'."

Juan Yasser Serrano? - Clapp - 03-03-2010

We signed him.

Well there's a quarter of a million dollars down the drain...fucking HENDRY.

Juan Yasser Serrano? - Destined - 03-03-2010

He related to Pedro?

Eh, I wouldn't freak over this. With those numbers he had... they must at least see something in his arm and maybe feel they can develop him. International findings are key in this game, and other players in these countries take notice. Gotta take some chances.

Juan Yasser Serrano? - The Dude - 03-03-2010

Hendry probably thought he was ordering a Cuban sandwich with Serrano peppers.

Not freak out? That money could have been used for something constructive...like, I dunno...free mustard at the ballpark.

Wait.

You did see that the article was written by a Cuban site?
Do you think they want to promote defectors or rail upon them?

It probably isn't the most trustworthy source, but when it comes to Cuba, baseball or otherwise, information is hard to come by regardless. Who else would know more about Cuban players than the Cuban press?

Juan Yasser Serrano? - Scarey - 03-03-2010

The guy worked out in front of Cubs officials. I'm confident he impressed at least to a tiny degree. Odds are this guy doesn't do anything note worthy as a minor leaguer, but then again, most of them don't. It's not a bad move to take a gamble on.
