He should be right at home on this team then. There's no way that Theriot gets that ball that Castro just slipped trying to play in the 7th... no way in hell. You think a 20 year-old kid isn't going to be a bit nervous playing his first game at home? Give him a break.

I was amazed that that throw was online. I agree that was impressive. There may be good reason for how he's been playing but the fact is he has four errors already.

Booing a veteran is one thing. A 20-year old fresh off the pine who is having probably the worst game of his life, in his 1st home game ever? I doubt anyone is booing. And surely no one is complaining nearly as much as you. Like CC said, get off his ass.

There WAS booing after the third error...and I thought it was disgusting. I'm just cracking wise that Tommy would approve of it.

Castro being called up? - Clapp - 05-10-2010

The booing was absolutely a joke. He's a 20-year-old playing his first game in his home park in front of 40,000 fans with all of the pressure in the world on him. And if you didn't expect him to make a shitload of errors, especially on routine plays, you're a dumbass. He's going to make some great plays, and you can clearly see his talent out there. He has incredibly quick hands and feet. But any rookie shortstop is going to boot his fair share of routine plays, especially a 20-year-old with limited minor league experience.

And the last play was just a mental mistake after the error. The dude's trying to stay up in the bigs and everybody's talked about how hard he plays and works. And believe me, after you make a few errors, your head drifts to another world. I had a couple games like that in freaking high school and wanted to shoot myself out there. Imagine then having it happen in front of a huge crowd at Wrigley Field when they're crowning you the franchise savior. It's easy to make a mental error then.

All the booing's going to do is kill his confidence. Let the kid play, and we're gonna have to live with the errors. He'll be a very good one there down the road, but it's going to take some time.

I agree with almost all of that. I don't know about a shitload of errors...I expect him to make a bunch...but not at this clip. It's worrisome. He needs coaching...he doesn't need to be ridden, he can't feel worse about the errors than he makes himself feel. he needs coaching so that rather than stupify himself with worry, Tram or someone can turn them into teachable moments...a positive. Tell him that little thing he can do differently that will make a difference.

He's a talent.

I don't know why you guys are so freaked that I find 5 errors in what, 4 games...disturbing. I don't think that's an acceptable number for a minor league call-up. It may be normal for a guy that's just out of his teens and that might just mean that he's not ready to play short in the majors.

Yep, and maybe he's not "ready". But I think we're better with him out there and Theriot at 2nd. Theriot's looked great there, and the overall range up the middle is much better now. We've just let so many damn Texas leaguers drop in the outfield as well that rangy guys can get to. I think Starlin's going to make some differences for us that don't show up in the scorebook. And he's going to hit at this level immediately. I think a .280 hitter that boosts our team speed and defense is somebody that should be up. Now, yeah, if he keeps making 3 errors in games, then it might be a bit too much...

Well I didn't turn on the game till the 8th. That booing is uncalled for. You don't boo a rookie who just got to the big leagues.

I love me some Clapp.

Castro being called up? - veryzer - 05-11-2010

I don't condone booing a 20 year old rookie in his first game. All I ever really said is that Soriano deserved to be booed.

And he did.

Castro being called up? - ruby23 - 05-11-2010

The fact of the matter is, if the Cubs had hit with RISP, the 3 errors wouldn't have even mattered.

Castro being called up? - rok - 05-11-2010

The only time I think booing in that instance was defensible was when Castro gave up on that last grounder and allowed the runner to advance to 2B. That is inexcusable. But hey, hopefully we've seen the worst possible defense out of the kid and he will put this behind him. He's better than this.

Castro being called up? - Kid - 05-11-2010

They should change Castro's number from 13 to .714. That's his slugging percentage and his fielding percentage.

Castro being called up? - Kid - 05-11-2010

He's also tied for 4th place among NL shortstops for errors.

Castro being called up? - PcB - 05-12-2010

ARam tells Castro to "shake off" the booing.
