The more I think about it, the more I suspect that Stroman was signed to flip at the deadline. Stroman alone isn't enough to make the team a contender. Hell, even Stroman + Correa isn't. There are just too many question marks and holes in the roster to think this team can compete anytime in the next 2-3 years. It's a 2-year contract (plus an option year), which would be incredibly easy to trade. If he performs reasonably well, they could get a nice return for him at the deadline. It's actually a pretty smart move...but I'm not going to get my hopes up that it signals that they're looking to build a winner for 2022.

I don't think Stroman was misled. But what is he going to say? "Yeah...Jed told me we're going to try to catch lightning in a bottle in 2022, but if it doesn't work out I'll get traded to a contender." You say all the right things to the public. Right now the Cubs are trying to drum up some interest in the team (and it's working). Again, I don't think this is a bad move at all. In fact, it's a great move. But I don't think it's some sort of sign that they're going for it in 2022.

I just don't see how you can look at the Cubs roster and make sense of a contender out of what they have to work with right now. Other than Contreras, I don't think there's a single guy in their lineup who I have any confidence in to consistently produce.

I don't see a contender, but they can sign their way to being competitive if they wanted to. My guess is they want to be in the mix in 2023 on, not expecting to be in 2022.

Only in baseball can the offer of federal mediators to end lockout be a bad thing
After the 1994 experience with moderation, the players view of federal mediators is that federal mediators focus on a process which typically leads to a split the difference in offers and requires an additional 3-4 weeks for “the process”. Players believe that they have already offered reasonable concessions while owners have stonewalled.
Didn’t believe that either side would put games would at risk for next season after the pandemic BS and shortened seasons but clearly I underestimated the stupidity and stubbornness at play

Yeah, and I'm not surprised actually. From a goodwill with the fans perspective it would be a huge win to say the least. What'll be interesting is if the Cubs do make an offer and it's in line with others he receives-- does he take it or not. On one hand, it makes all the sense in the world for his personal brand, his foundation, spokesperson opportunities, etc., to come back to the city that's going to support him like no other will, but on the other hand there was some bad feelings in the departure and negotiations or lack there of last offseason.
