i'd love the chance to swing at his balls.

A guy with experience closing, who walks relatively few and gives up hardly any homeruns. If he can find his form in IA, he'd be perfect for the job.
I just don't know if he's going to be that dominant closer again, especially if his fastball is topping out in the 87 mph range. But definitely him on his game is the best option there is. The problem though, is when would we even get to really find that out? They're not going to just call him up and put him in the closer role. They're going to ease him in. And trying to figure out who our closer is in like September is not a good thing. It's something we need to settle now. That's why in all likelihood they just won't even mess with it and leave Gregg in there.

It's pretty incredible.

What maybe I'm most pissed off about is this couldn't happen like 3 fucking days ago when the Heath Bells were on the market. It would be impossible to acquire a closer off waivers now.

Kevin Gregg - Ace - 08-02-2009

It's back-to-back games, and it was awful.

But it was two blown saves. One of them was a one-run game. It happens.

Or Sherrill. Why were we so high on Grabow? Was the asking price too high for Sherill?

From all reports, yeah. Everything I'd heard is that we wanted Sherrill the most if possible, but the Orioles were asking way too much. And as I showed earlier, Kevin Gregg was terrific in June and July, so they didn't think it was worth it to give up all that for Sherrill, as they were just looking for a solid lefty and Grabow could be had for a much cheaper price. Move to now, I think they try to get a Sherrill deal done for sure.

i don't have a clue how the waivers and such work, but is it impossible to get someone now?

Unless there's a massively overpaid closer out there, it's unlikely we could get one.

Welp... this is odd. So considering Ryan has to be on the team in about 10 days or we lose him, this is interesting of Lou to say:

QUOTE Now it's anyone's guess as to whether Ryan will be called up at all. Asked after the game if the Cubs have considered it, Piniella gave a look of disbelief.

"We've got two lefties now," he said. "We've had one all year, and now we're going to have three?"

So that's a "no?"

"I don't make that decision," he replied. "I haven't seen Ryan pitch or throw. Whoever is watching can make those determinations."

And when asked about thinking of changing closers he said, "Why should I?"

Lou really makes me scratch my head sometimes. So, Ryan is pitching well down in the minors and we're just gonna dump him right when the bullpen is starting to look shaky at best again? Wow, this organization is rudderless...

Kevin Gregg - BT - 08-02-2009

I just heard the Marlin announcers call of the game last night and tonight. Somehow they made it sound like the Marlins won game 7 of the World series, both night. They completely lost their shit on that second home run. It was exciting and all, but I thought I might have to change their pants after they won it.

Kevin Gregg - kbwsb - 08-03-2009

If we were to try out Guzman in the closer role, the time would be now, with 2 months left in the season. If he's pitching the best, it's not out of the question to see now if he can handle the pressure, instead of waiting till later.
