WGN No More? - VanSlawAndCottoCheese - 05-30-2014 I actually can pick up WBBM a little more clearly than WGN on the radio at night, so that would be good news for me. WGN No More? - MrSheps - 05-30-2014 Quote:Sorry if someone posted this already. Sounds like an announcement about a move to WBBM may be coming soon.Well, that's sort of sad in a way. But I want the team to take the most money obviously, so what can you do... I wonder if this signals that WGN will not be re-upping on the TV side either. WGN No More? - jstraw - 05-30-2014 WGN No More? - rok - 05-30-2014 This Liguori sounds like a real toolbag. Way to put down the value of an asset in which your company still owns 5%. http://www.chicagobusiness.com/article/20140530/NEWS01/140539978/wgn-america-to-drop-chicago-sports WGN No More? - Andy - 05-30-2014 At my desk, I have my grandmother's Die Hard Cub Fan Club official member card. It's a constant reminder to me of why I'm a Cubs fan. My grandma pulled me into being a Cubs fan at a young age. She grew up listening to the Cubs on WGN. For as long as I could remember, she would listen to the Cubs on the radio and score the games. She was a Harry Caray hater, so she would listen to the game on the radio and watch the game with the sound muted. When Harry came to the radio during the 4-6 innings, she would turn on the tv's sound and turn off the radio. She used to talk about her father sitting with her and listening to games on the radio. My grandma passed away years ago, but WGN's pull made her a Cubs fan and me one through her. While I understand the move, it's kind of a sad for me. WGN No More? - Kid - 05-30-2014 While they probably won't be on WGN anyways, at least MLB.TV shows the WGN games. WGN No More? - vitaminB - 05-30-2014 Baseball time is here again You can catch it all on your regional cable sports affiliate or via the mlb ap. So stamp your feet and clap your hands Chicago Cubs got the greatest fans A sad, sad day. I'm only a Cubs fan because of WGN. WGN No More? - nakedman1664 - 05-30-2014 ^ Same here. Grew up watching them with my mom here in Florida. Bummer. WGN No More? - Destined - 05-30-2014 I'd be a Braves fan if it wasn't for WGN. It's just a money thing, and he probably feels burned by the shitty ratings. Keeping in mind WGN 9 and WGN America are separate (ie, 9 has a new deal for Blackhawks games for 5 years), it's probably true that it's not worth the costs to air the games outside of the home market. I remember a few years back TBS really going for the broad "we air baseball games" approach and focusing less heavily on Atlanta. Either way, the regional approach works better. BUT, he's totally full of shit when he says it's not a revenue generator. I can't imagine "Salem" makes more in gross advertising dollars, but it might in net because it's cheaper. One thing to take note of, his cheap shot, "If the Cubs continue on this path to virtual irrelevancy, it's really not going to matter”. For years now this is the one concern/argument I've had that I feel I've never gotten a good response to when discussing "the Plan". If you're trying to sell your house you fix it up, you don't take a shit all over the sofa. If anyone should know this it should be the Ricketts as they bought the team from the Trib after they inflated the value. The reason to spend money at the MLB level while building the system, even if it was just to be .500, is TV deals, to go in with a good argument not just point to past and possible future numbers. Assuming they're not stupid and they know that, I have to assume this year and this half of the TV deal was never much of a target, and they always planned to wait until 2019. Hopefully that's not the case though are close to a full deal and will announce it before next season. WGN No More? - DarthHater - 05-30-2014 Quote:This Liguori sounds like a real toolbag. Whether it really affects the asset value or not, the Tribune Board of Directors should smack his smug yuppie ass for bad-mouthing an entity that the company owns a piece of. But hey, he can go to bed tonight secure in his ability to keep feeding some brain-dead segment of the public more reeking piles of monkey-shit like Salem. WGN No More? - rok - 06-04-2014 WSCR reporting that the deal with WBBM radio is official with a press conference scheduled for tomorrow. WGN No More? - rok - 11-14-2014 Sounds like the team will be back on WGN TV (locally at least) next season through 2019 but may broadcast fewer games with some moving to CSN. It could be a revenue sharing deal, which lowers Tribune Media's commitment but increases the team's upside. Bottom line is anyone still claiming the team was dumb to opt out of a below market deal isn't paying attention. http://www.chicagotribune.com/business/ct-cubs-tv-1114-biz-20141113-story.html |
