Spoke with Steve Stone at dinner on Friday - HemisFear - 02-02-2009

As with all things in life, it's how you respond to any given situation that you are in control of. I wouldn't doubt at all, a number of select Cub fans giving Stoney shit for going over to the White Sox. I'm not necissarily defending the guy, nor do I care if he hates the Cubs currently. What I was in control of was me, and after he saw that it didn't phase me a bit, and I was jovial with him in response, he immediately opened up the conversation in a warm fashion. Perhaps he definately meant to rib me to see what my response would be, but the net result of the initial conversation opener was a freindly exchange. Had he said to me "oh, you're a Cub fan, sorry I have no time for you" I would have come away with a much different interperitation of the situation. But once the initial response was out of the way, he was very warm, and consistently inviting my friend and I into conversation with him.

Do I think he was testing me, yup. Do I think once he saw I wasn't going to be a prick about it he decided 'this is just a nice guy, let's chat', yup.

Look I don't think the guy is some messiah, but I don't think he's a villian. I think he's a begrudged human being who carries a chip on his shoulder. That doesn't, for me, negate his vast contributions to the Chicago Cubs and their fans. He could have handled the situation MUCH differently if he truly wanted to be a prick about it. Bottom line, I walked away thrilled with the experience.

Not to nitpick, but our culture is not to hate the Sox, but to ignore them and their fans. Theirs is to constantly remind us that we're stupid. There's a huge difference between the two. The problem is that it's become harder and harder to ignore them in recent years, and that's no thanks to Stone at the moment.

Just a few thoughts from me...

- I think it's cool that Stone took the time to talk with you -- he obviously didn't have to spend that much time with you, and that was nice of him. A lot of guys wouldn't do that.

- I love Bricklayer with a passion.

- I know a couple of Sox fans who aren't complete dicks. But even those guys love to talk shit. I will never initiate a baseball conversation with a Sox fan -- ever. And for the record, as much as I hate the Sox and their fans, I don't talk shit at all unless they start it with me. That's the honest truth. And why would I ever start it? No matter what I say, it always comes back to 100 years. Sox fans will always hold that trump card and that is why 2005 was one of the worst years of my entire life. Before 2005, we were on a level playing surface with them, and you wouldn't hear too much shit. Not anymore.

- It isn't just that Stone is bitter about the split from the Cubs -- I would totally get that. It's that he has basically adopted the Sox fan persona that Hawk, DJ, Swish, AJ, Ozzie, etc. all embody that I hate with every fiber of my being. Stone didn't have to go that route. He could've taken the high road, but he has decided to be a douchebag.

- It really makes me sad how this ended up because I loved Stone. He was one of my favorite broadcasters. But now he's nothing but a bitter, hateful Sox fan with a gigantic chip on his shoulder. There's nothing appealing about that.

That's about as fair and objective as someone can be on that side of the fence. I understand at minimum.

Is this a joke Rok?

i think rok is right, it's just that some of us (myself included) choose not to adhere to that.

QUOTE Kaplan asked Stone about Alfonso Soriano in the leadoff spot. Stone thinks Aaron Miles would be a better option on the days he is playing....he went on and added there are a couple of players that would fit the bill better than Soriano.

Stone emphatically reminded Kaplan that no team has ever won the World Series with Alfonso Soriano on the roster. Soriano leads off a lot of games according to Stone and he is not a leadoff hitter. Stone added Lou Piniella has other options and maybe better ones.

I've always hated Soriano leading off but I'd still rather see him there instead of Miles. I'm not sure what all these other options are, because I don't see too many, unless Fukudome miraculously puts up a line like what BP is projecting for him.

No way in hell do you want Aaron Miles getting more ABs than anyone on the team. That would be a mistake.

No team has ever won the World Series with Alfonso Soriano on the roster? That's a weird statement. How many players that are in the HOF haven't won a World Series?

I must have missed this last week, but it absolutely is not a joke. Prior to 2005, Cubs fans couldn't give two shits about the Sox or their fans. For the most part, that still holds true, regardless of what is discussed here and on other fan messageboards.

That was weird.
Anyway, Alf joins Ty Cobb, Ted Williams, Barry Bonds, Ernie Banks and a number of other total superstars who have never won a ring. You can't do it by yourself.
Stone has an Alf stick in his ass about something.

The Alf bashing may make some sense by the time his contract is up. I was happy when we signed him but kinda wish now it could have been a 4 or 5 year deal.
