It is too bad. But he's still one of the all-time greatest Cubs.
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Not counting Santo because I think he'll get in eventually, I don't think someone who isn't/won't be in the H.O.F. should have their number retired. Since Sosa won't get in for a LOOOONNNGGG time if he even does, he shouldn't have his # retired.
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Sosa should be a first ballot guy.
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Mark McGwire should have been too... that worked out well...
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
McGwire's eligibility for the Hall was much closer, timing-wise, to the steroid controversy. Also, whether it's fair or not, Sosa's name isn't quite as tarnished as McGwire's.

I'll bet everything I own that Santo gets in before Sosa.

This is where I am at. If he took steroids, he didn't get caught doing it. As for the corked bat thing, that was one instance, but how many other bats did he break before and after that that did not have any cork? Also, IIRC, that was the ONLY bat of his that had cork in it.

I am not saying that Sosa is innocent because I believe he did something, however, he hasn't been named like A-Rod, Bonds, Palmeiro, Tejada etc. He has 600 + HR's, he should be in 1st ballot.

His numbers don't matter. Bonds won't get in 1st ballot. The reason he's not getting in is because of the people voting to keep him out. A huge % of the voters are not going to vote for someone involved with steroids, as you can see with Big Mac last year. He would be a first ballot guy, but why did he only get like 5% of the vote? It's just not gonna happen for ANY of these guys for a long time, until these voters get replaced by younger voters who understand the era.

it's ludacrous? really? he hasn't gotten in the last 20 times, why wopuld he now? whats so off the wall about not thinking he'll get in? last year was his best chance and he didn't in. he never will. he would have by now.

Fergie, Maddux To Have #31 Retired By Cubs - PcB - 05-04-2009

Why was last year his best chance to get in?

because there were changes in the voting process that would seemingly make it easier for him to get in and yet he still didn't come close. that ship has sailed. it ain't gonna happen.

and even if i'm wrong and he does get in, that doesn't mean my statement was ludicrous.
