I cannot make sense of this deal.  His stats were better this year than last, but nothing of the last 2 months of the season gave the impression he would return to his best.

I don't care if the contract was the Giants resigning Zito.  A $35M contract is never comparable to a $126M contract.

MLB trade rumors posted a fairly interesting article on pitcher's salaries. This is what the article said about Lincecum:

The model was just a year off with Lincecum, predicting $47.4MM over 2.9 years. That is equivalent to a a two-year, $32.7MM contract. The Lincecum deal is the first salary to determine how much salary inflation there is this season. His two-year, $35MM deal works out to 7% inflation. It is way too early to set an exact inflation amount, but it is something to keep an eye on.

 
 

Maybe 2/$35 might not be that far off for him. I think the Hunter Pence contract is way worse than Lincecum's contract.

Based on that, yes. However, he is expected to perform better based on numbers from this past season. Lincecum's xFIP, xFIP-, SIERA, etc are right there with Latos, CC, Gio Gonzalez, (depending which stat you look at). Would you give any of those guys $35mil/2 years? I would and not think twice. Would I give it to Lincecum? No, but considering he would likely get more on an open market...$17.5mil isn't THAT far off how much I would've given him per season.
