I don't, and I'm glad he declined. I'm just saying that from a strictly financial standpoint he probably could have been around $10M or more (salaries hardly ever go down in arb, right?) if he went through arbitration.

Know that Theo has a plan but it's somewhat embarassing that the Cubs could be out spent by the Nationals and Rangers for 2 free agent players that clearly could help the Cubs become more competitive in the short and long term.
With the addition of another wild card team on the playoffs in 2013, Cubs would be looking at making a serious run next year with Prince and Yu. Best we should expect for this squad in 2013 is 500.

I'd much happier to see them commit to rebuilding the club than make the kind of patchwork signings that led this team to the state its in.

Agreed. I dont agree that adding a couple of pieces like Fielder would have made us much of a contender anyway. I understand the point of view, but I don't think its correct. I think once we get back on track and rebuild the system we won't have to go through a rebuild very often anymore anyways.

Other than trading for Rizzo, the moves the Cubs have made this offseason would have complemented signings of Yu and Fielder. The significant difference is probably another $35 MM or so in compensation for this year and probably another 15-20 wins to this year's squad.
If LaHair is a bust and Rizzo fizzles out, Cubs will be scrounging for a first baseman in a few years. Now I'm expecting someone to mention Vogelbach, again a prospect who hasn't experienced his first year of professional baseball yet. Any of these 3 could be "the man" for the Cubs but am willing to wager that none of them will match what Fielder has already accomplish in his career or what he'll probably contribute the next 5 years.

I'll be interested to see who the Cubs will have drive in runs this year or next. They don't have legit 3-4-5 batters. While Fielder would cost a bit, he'd fill a huge void (pun intended). Obviously it's not going to happen, but it's still a little frustrating to see such a big (pun intended again) opportunity slip by.

First base is one of the easiest positions in baseball to fill. It's tough to find people as good as Fielder or Pujols (obviously), but you don't need to blow your budget on a first basemen under the assumption no one else will ever come along.

I tend to side with you on this. I wanted Fielder because he's proven and would really fill the biggest need other than another solid SP. I get building with youth and all that, but it's the same feeling I have with Garza. Why not go with a proven MLB stud instead of risking it with maybes? At the end of the day, I think Prince would have taken 5-6 years to play for Chicago. And I don't see how that doesn't make sense.
Saying that, I like the aggressive move to net Rizzo, but would have been more pleased with Fielder manning 1B this year.
