totally. i love ryno, but i'm not convinced that he'd be a good manager. i'm thinking if sandberg was a utility infielder his whole career, no one would be clamouring for him to manage.

Just looking at Lou and Dusty -- I don't think either of them were remotely prepared for what they were getting themselves into. Managing the Cubs isn't like managing other teams and I don't think you can understand it until you experience it.
Sandberg never won a WS with the Cubs, but it was hardly his fault. He killed in both NLCS series he played in.
His postseason stats: .385/.457/.641

Side note -- I don't know for sure that Sandberg is The Guy. But I do want a former Cub. Preferably a catcher (which is why Girardi was my first choice).

I hate the guy more than just about anyone on the planet except Ozzie, but I'd be lying if I said that I'm not impressed with his track record. Then again, with Pujols and the team and Duncan turning absolute crap into gold like an alchemist, it's hard to give most of the credit to LaRussa alone. At the same time, if you get both Duncan and LaRussa as part of the package (maybe even pry away Pujols as a FA), I could get behind LaRussa in a Cubs uniform.

I don't. I want a manager who has never won a world series. I want a manager that knows what the fans and lifetime Cubs players feel like. I want a manager that is hungry for a title, not a manager that won 3 WS elsewhere and doesn't understand what its like to be a Cub or the pressure of trying to snap a 100 year streak.
I agree with Butcher, I want a former Cubs player, preferably one who didn't have success elsewhere like Grace.
