I'd agree, to an extent, but from the Padres point of view (and assuming it's bell for wells), they are taking a 31 year old career middle reliever with ZERO saves last year, and turning him into an effective (at least to this point) young major league starter. That's a huge win for them.

From Buster Olney yesterday:
<!--quoteo-->QUOTE <!--quotec-->Derrick (Tulsa, OK)

Have you heard anything about the Padres shopping Heath Bell? Do you agree with others that he could bring back several legit prospects?

Derrick -- as of two weeks ago, rival executives were saying that they sense no interest on the part of the Padres to trade Bell. San Diego has already angered its fans, and the Padres have to keep somebody... It seems like Bell and Gonzalez are to 2009 what Benes and Gwynn were to 1993.<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->

If it's Bell for Wells, I'm be fairly disappointed. I don't see Wells having a career comparable to what he's done in his short major league career, but I think with his plus command he could be a 4.00-4.70 ERA guy for a few years.

Where was Randy Wells last year?
We would be taking a converted catcher with an ERA in the minors of 4+ into a proven bullpen guy with an ERA of 2.51 and a BB/K of 70/209 the last 3 years at the major league level.

I've got a bad feeling about this. My guess is that we aren't happy with what we give up.<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->

As long as it is not Marmol, I'm ok with it. I would like to see Randy Wells for a few more starts but his value may be at it's peak right now. I think if you trade him you gotta find another SP as I like Marshall in the pen right now.

If the Padres don't necessarily want a major league ready guy, it might take a Carpenter or Harrison along with one or two lesser prospects.<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Wells for Bell and Shark to the rotation?
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
I hope not, at least on the Samardzija part.

Is Wells sudden transformation into a stud because of something in particular? Did he learn a new pitch last winter, or something?
I've been pretty amazed by his starts this season, but his track record doesn't seem to indicate that he'd be this good.

Cubs close to acquiring Heath Bell? - Fella - 06-30-2009

Yeah I think that guy must be pulling shit out of his ass. That sucks, I would really like Bell.

You're a liar.

And yes, a back of the rotation pitcher that can pitch in the mid to lower 4s in terms of ERA is very valuable.
