It's cool that Heilman is a Cub fan. I do like that.
I wonder, though, what is it that makes him or anyone else think he could succeed as a SP?

It still might, but "appears" less likely now. I, for one, would have been pissed about the DeRosa trade if I didn't think we were going to get Peavy.

Also nobody give me the Bradley bullshit when it comes to DeRosa. We could have had both as our salary limit still stands.<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->
What is our salary limit?
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Mid 140's. I don't know if we could've kept both as we're likely still making at least another move.
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
I know that we have heard that number in the media, but I am not sure if we really know what the true limit is.

He was a starter all the way through college and the minors, and he has three really good pitches. His stuff really projects well as a starter.

I'm pretty sure Hendry or somebody specifically said into the mid 140's.

We need 5.5 starters anyway.

Sully just said how he of course doesn't get along with Zambrano, but Prior was the worst. He also hates this Heilman trade, that's why I was posting in here. Kap mentioned how Marmol and Heilman led the NL in pitcher abuse points last year for relievers. Again, this is why I want Marmol in a closer only role. Since Heilman was a starter in the past, his pitching load from last year doesn't worry me much.

Relief pitchers from Indiana who grew up Cubs fans have worked out well for us in the past.

jack (chicago): You spoke on today's trade for the cubs, how do you feel about the additions or miles and bradley. Also, who will lead off for the cubs this year?

Jim Callis: I haven't liked many of the Cubs' moves this offseason. Seems like their plan centered around getting Bradley, but I don't buy that he can stay healthy and play the OF on a regular basis. They also overpaid for him on the current market, and that led to the trade of DeRosa, whom they'll really miss. Miles is a poor substitute for DeRosa.

Didn't the trade happen first?

I really don't see Miles as DeRosa's "replacement". I think Fontenot's going to end up playing more there, and anybody that watched the Cubs on a daily basis last year knows he really can hit. Maybe he doesn't keep slugging at that rate, but that guy hit the ball hard in just about every single game he played in. People are unwilling to believe in him because of his size and the fact that he was a little bit of a late bloomer, but he sure as hell looked like a legitimate major league hitter to me the last 2 years.

I agree, Clapp. Also, here's a short NY Times blog on Heilman.
