Jimmy Nordling's family had high hopes for him. As a boy in O'Fallon, he showed aptitude early for such thing as not losing his pants, underpants, socks, and even his shoes on outings. No one remember exactly when things took an unfortunate turn, but family members frequently mentioned a time when around age nine or ten, he returned from a Cub Scout meeting with his jeans on inside out and only one sock. When asked about it, he mumbled something about Tim McCarver visiting his Webelos pack and then feeling "funny" after the Cardinal great offered him a juice box.
