From ESPN's Jason Grey about the AFL:

<!--quoteo-->QUOTE <!--quotec-->When I did my pitcher wrap-up, I focused more on players who were starters or seen as potential closers. However, I was asked to give my thoughts on a few pitchers who didn't necessarily fit that description:

Pittsburgh Pirates lefty Donnie Veal pitched well down here and generated some buzz. I think I was part of that, as I sent some tweets that Veal looked as good as I had ever seen him (which is not as big a compliment as it might appear) and others picked up on it. I've seen a lot of him since instructional league in 2006, and every single time he had no clue how to throw consistent strikes. However, his delivery looked a little cleaner, and he had better fastball command and an improved changeup. Still, I saw him be so bad for so long, it's hard for me to get that excited about it. I'm trying not to be too rigid and recognize some of the changes in his game, but I just don't trust him as anything beyond a situational lefty at this point. Progress has been made, though.<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Apparently Chone Figgins is close to signing a 4-year, $36mil deal with Seattle.

Per MLBTradeRumors.com

<!--quoteo-->QUOTE <!--quotec-->The Cardinals are nearing a deal with Brad Penny, tweets Andrew Baggarly of the San Jose Mercury News. He says the Giants "don't expect to compete." Penny, 31, made 30 starts between the Red Sox and Giants this year, posting a 4.88 ERA, 5.7 K/9, and 2.6 BB/9. He's the hardest-throwing free agent starter, and would be interesting in St. Louis on a one-year deal.<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Another Dave Dunan reclamation project?

Ugh. I don't like that at all. If Duncan gets him on track, Carp, the tall, skinny douche (why can't I come up with his name right now?), and Penny would be the best 1-3 in baseball.

MLB News & Notes (other than Cubs or Sox) - rok - 12-07-2009

I expect Penny to be the comeback player of the year if Duncan gets his mitts on him.

MLB News & Notes (other than Cubs or Sox) - Butcher - 12-07-2009

Wainwright is the douche's name. Sheesh. I've got early-onset Alzheimer's.

If we're still looking for a second baseman, Murton got released by the Rockies.

The St. Louis Cardinals and right-handed pitcher Brad Penny have agreed to a deal, sources told ESPN The Magazine's Buster Olney.

Penny's one-year contract is worth $7.5 million and contains $1.5 million in performance bonuses, according to sources. The deal is pending a physical, which will likely be done on Tuesday.

Looks like 3 years.

So, Suppan Part Deux, eh? They can have fun with that.

MLB News & Notes (other than Cubs or Sox) - rok - 12-08-2009

He's much better than Suppan, but they still need another SP or 2 before they scare me.

MLB News & Notes (other than Cubs or Sox) - Coldneck - 12-08-2009

Randy Wolf was actually quite good last year. His career has been a roller coaster though.
