Certainly it is not as if Lofton was just a throw-in, but the thrust of the deal was the THIRD BASEMAN, Aramis Ramirez. Perhaps you forget who was starting at 3B at the time...

Remember though, everybody thought Bobby Hill was still going to be a very good leadoff hitter in this league though and for a long time. The difference between him and Aramis in the eyes of people around baseball at that time wasn't very big. People thought Aramis could be an All-Star 3b and Hill could be an All-Star 2b and elite leadoff hitter.

And by the way, that's sort of how I feel about this deal with what you guys are saying about Lofton/Aramis. Grabow is going to help us now, but I'm more excited about the possibility of Gorzelanny getting it back together. Odds are every bit as good he'll continue to suck, but if not, this would be one helluva trade and he could be a part of our rotation for a long time.

That's good to hear coming from Gorzelanny. If he pitches well for us, and I hope he does, you won't ever hear me throw his Sox love in his face ever again. He's one of us now.
And yes, this is a perfect example of the difference between the two organizations, but those people have a tin ear when it comes to stories like these. Like them keep that chip on their shoulders, and I hope they choke on it one day in hell.

Unfortunately your memories are slightly skewed by the fact Ramirez has been kickass for us for years now.
Before the trade happened was about the time I joined ITI [Cubstalk]. Maybe a few months earlier, but it was about when I started posting.
I recall someone posting a report that Dusty demanded Hendry to "get me a centerfielder and 3rd baseman."
This was after Patterson carried us and went down with the knee injury and Lenny Harris, Mark Bellhorn and Jose Hernandez all spent time hitting like shit at third.
After we traded jack shit for Lofton and Ramirez there were two schools of thought: the Pirates fans' and the Cubs fans'. The only people clamoring about Ramirez being traded were Pirates fans because he was a year and a half removed from a 100rbi, 30 hr season, was with the organization for so many years and showed so much promise, despite the fact that he was getting suspended for throwing his helmet at Ben Sheets, charging the mound, arguing, getting nagging injuries, etc. Basically, their fans were polarized by him because of his immaturity, yet vast potential. The Pirates were done experimenting with him because they couldn't afford the experiment anymore. It's actually very similar to how the Adrian Beltre situation in Los Angeles was.
Now, from our perspective we just landed one of the best leadoff hitters in years, our best leadoff hitter ever and a guy who had potential at 3rd...better third baseman...better being relative because most of ours had been hitting around .200 for 3 months. No one was really paying that much attention to Ramirez around the league because he was batting like .220 with no power. Pittsburgh was for sure, but not us nor anyone in the league. We were like, "Yea we got Lofton <i>and</i> a guy who's better than our 3rd baseman that has potential to be a star for a pile of shit! Hendry is awesome!"
I wonder how many people here will say how pumped they were when we initially traded Choi for Lee...cause not many were initially, but after so contemplation everyone realized Lee was what were hoping to get out of Choi anyway.
Anyway, Ruby's right.

I wasn't psyched about the Lee/Choi trade when it went down -- I'll gladly admit that. In fact, I remember telling a friend right after it happened, "We just traded for the only guy in the Marlins lineup that we were able to retire in that series." And, of course, I was wrong.
But I'm not lying when I say I was very psyched about Ramirez. You and/or ruby can continue to call me (and whoever else) a liar, but I'm not sure what the point of that would be.
