i can't link on this computer, so if someone could help me out, i'd appreciate it.
apparently theres concern that cub fans are gonna be all over bradleys ass if he continues to struggle. apparently cub fans expect perfection from their black players. is this the case? i've probably only been to maybe 100 games in my life and i've never seen it. you guys that go to 100 games a year may have a better idea than i do. are cub fans racist? more so than other team's fans?
or is this something that dusty perpetuated a few years ago thats just stuck?

I haven't read the article yet, but I just want to say two words, Todd Hundley. We were merciless towards him. That guy practically got booed for just signing the National Anthem. And to a lesser degree Kevin Orie and Brant Brown, in recent years.
Also, explain why DLee is still highly regarded despite his struggles. If we had no tolerance for black players under performing he would have gotten the treatment a while ago.
While there are racist assholes everywhere, I don't think Cubs fans are more guilty of it.

What are we supposed to do? A guy is sucking and acting like a bitch about it, but he's black so we should lay off. To hell with that. Cubs fans don't expect perfection from black players, they expect them to perform near their career averages, just like what we expect from whites, Latinos, whatever. Along the lines of what Brick said, I'd add Randy Myers to that list- probably the most ruthlessly assailed player in Cubs history and a white guy.

My personal opinion...for what (little) it is worth
I don't think Cubs fans are any more racist than other fanbases as a whole. I think a few bad apples hurling racial insults or doing stupid things often end up getting lables put on a larger population of fans.
I also think we in Chicago do a lot of stereotyping of different fanbases that is hardly true. Bears fans are still perceived nationally as the Superfans from SNL. Bulls fans are still seen as wearing Coogi sweaters. Hawks fans are still seen as the lunchbox and thermos crew from the 60s and 70s. Cubs fans are seen largely as those people who show up at the park, the Wrigleyville crowd who tends to lean more towards racist than an older and more mature crowd would. Those stereotypes, while they do describe a portion of the fanbases (and I'm not going into talking about those toothless crackheaded sox fans :-) )don't accurately describe a greater portion, and surely don't describe the type of fan that you find on a site like this.

The problem is that multiple players have now made mention of it. Both Cubs players and visiting players. There must be something to it. It certainly isn't to say that it's not a vocal minority, but the fact that the majority doesn't put an end to it, doesn't bode well.
Obviously players that play well aren't going to hear it.

I'm just gonna throw this out there . . . since meeting my wife 7 years ago and spending alot more time in the Chicago area, I've heard some of the most ridiculously insensitive things I can imagine come from people mouths. I've heard things said by complete strangers, in public situations, that I couldn't fathom anyone saying. I may be from podunk, backwards, hillbilly Iowa, but I've never heard anything here like what I've heard in some of my trips to Chicago.

I could do something similar by saying the only person I've met from Iowa (other than you, Ruby), was a kid who moved to Chicago when I was in middle school. During his first weekend in Chicago, he snuck onto a golf course, slashed all the tires on the golf carts, drove one of them into a water hazard, and tipped over several vending machines. He got busted because he was bragging about it to everyone the next day in school.

I've been all over the country, and I don't think people are that different by and large aside from the deep south. That said, Chicagoans are right up there as far as the friendliest around when you compare huge cities. Maybe you're thinking Joliet is a good representation of Chicago?

It means that I've heard more racist comments there than I ever could have imagined. It means that I've heard the N word and other derrogatory terms used in passing, like it's common place, far too often. It means that I think there may be some truth to what the article is saying.
